Biological molecules: outline question

Outline7 marksChallenge

A student is investigating the sugar content of a honey sample. Honey contains reducing sugars (glucose and fructose) and a small amount of sucrose, which is a non-reducing sugar. The student wishes to estimate the total concentration of reducing sugars in the honey after converting sucrose into reducing sugars.

Outline the procedure the student should follow to achieve this, including the use of a semi-quantitative Benedict's test based on time to first colour change, and explain why acid hydrolysis is necessary in this procedure.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Outline means: Give the main points briefly. Less detail than describe, but every key step has to be there. One short line per step, in order. The marks are for coverage, not depth.
