Biological molecules: describe question

Describe7 marksChallenge

Table 1 shows some physical properties of water and of ethanol.

Table 1

PropertyWaterEthanol
Specific heat capacity / J g⁻¹ °C⁻¹4.182.44
Enthalpy of vaporisation / J g⁻¹2260846
Boiling point / °C10078

Describe how hydrogen bonding occurs between water molecules. Use the data in Table 1 and your knowledge of hydrogen bonding to explain the differences in specific heat capacity and latent heat of vaporisation between water and ethanol. Relate these properties to the roles of water in living organisms.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
