Cell membranes and transport: outline question

Outline7 marksChallenge

Outline the fluid mosaic model of cell surface membranes. In your answer, you should:

  • describe the arrangement of phospholipids, cholesterol, glycolipids, glycoproteins, and proteins in the membrane
  • explain the roles of these components in membrane stability, fluidity, permeability, transport, cell signalling, and cell recognition
  • include a clear distinction between carrier proteins and channel proteins
  • outline the main stages of cell signalling that involve cell surface receptors.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Outline means: Give the main points briefly. Less detail than describe, but every key step has to be there. One short line per step, in order. The marks are for coverage, not depth.
