Cell membranes and transport: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A student investigated osmosis using Visking tubing, which is a partially permeable membrane. Three lengths of Visking tubing were each filled with 10 cm³ of sucrose solution of different concentrations and tied at both ends. Each tube was weighed and then placed into a beaker of distilled water at 20°C. After 30 minutes, the tubes were removed, dried carefully, and weighed again. The results are shown in the table.

Compare the direction and amount of water movement for the 5% and 10% sucrose solutions, and explain your observations in terms of water potential.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
