Cell structure: explain question

Explain5 marksChallenge

A student uses a light microscope to observe a stained section of animal tissue. She calibrates an eyepiece graticule using a stage micrometer. The micrometer has 100 divisions per mm. She measures the length of a cell as 40 eyepiece units. At this magnification, each eyepiece unit corresponds to 2.5 µm. She also takes a photomicrograph of the same cell at the same magnification; the cell image in the photomicrograph measures 85 mm.

Define the terms magnification and resolution. Explain why the resolution of an electron microscope is greater than that of a light microscope. State the relationship linking image size, actual size and magnification, and explain which measurement must be converted before the relationship can be used.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
