Cell structure: define question

Define7 marksChallenge

A student makes a temporary mount of onion epidermal cells and observes them using a light microscope. She calibrates an eyepiece graticule with a stage micrometer that has 100 divisions, each 10 µm apart. When the two scales are aligned, 40 eyepiece divisions exactly cover 25 stage micrometer divisions. The student then measures the length of one epidermal cell as 8 eyepiece divisions.

(a) Define the term magnification. (b) Define the term resolution. (c) Determine the actual length of the cell in micrometers. Show all your working. (d) State why the resolution of an electron microscope is greater than that of a light microscope.
