Classification, biodiversity and conservation: discuss question

Discuss4 marksStandard

The pink-headed frog (Pseudophryne roseiceps) is a critically endangered amphibian endemic to a small tropical island. Its population has declined by over 90% in the past 20 years due to deforestation for agriculture, predation by introduced rats, and increased incidence of fungal disease linked to rising temperatures. Conservationists are considering establishing a protected area and a captive breeding programme using IVF and embryo transfer.

Discuss the reasons for maintaining biodiversity, and explain how each of these two conservation measures could help protect the pink-headed frog.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Discuss means: Set out the points on more than one side and weigh them up. Cover both sides, then finish with a judgement that follows from what you wrote.
