Outline5 marksStandard

An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of auxin on cell elongation in stem segments of a plant. Segments of equal initial length were placed in buffer solution; one set was treated with auxin and the other set was untreated (control). After 1 hour, the following measurements were taken:

SampleFinal length (mm)Cell wall pH
Control (untreated)10.25.5
Auxin-treated11.54.5

Both sets had an initial length of 10.0 mm.

Using the data above, outline the mechanism by which auxin stimulates cell elongation in plants.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Outline means: Give the main points briefly. Less detail than describe, but every key step has to be there. One short line per step, in order. The marks are for coverage, not depth.
