Energy and respiration: describe question

Describe5 marksChallenge

A student investigated the effect of temperature on the rate of respiration in yeast using the redox indicator DCPIP (2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol). DCPIP is blue when oxidised and becomes colourless when reduced. A yeast suspension was mixed with DCPIP and the time taken for the blue colour to disappear was measured at five different temperatures. The results are shown in the table.

Temperature (°C)Time for decolourisation (minutes)

Describe the pattern shown in the results and explain the observations in terms of the process of aerobic respiration in yeast.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
