Energy and respiration: describe question

Describe4 marksStandard

The balanced equation for the complete aerobic respiration of the fatty acid palmitic acid is:

C16H32O2+23 O2→16 CO2+16 H2O\mathrm{C_{16}H_{32}O_2 + 23\,O_2 \rightarrow 16\,CO_2 + 16\,H_2O}

Describe how this equation can be used to determine the respiratory quotient (RQ) of palmitic acid. Explain why the RQ value for a lipid, such as palmitic acid, is different from that of a carbohydrate, and state the significance of the RQ value in identifying the respiratory substrate used by an organism.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
