Genetic technology: outline question

Outline4 marksStandard

Soybean is a major crop used for animal feed and human food worldwide. Weeds compete with soybeans, reducing yields. Some soybean varieties have been genetically modified (GM) to be resistant to a specific broad-spectrum herbicide. Farmers can then spray the herbicide to kill weeds without harming the soybean plants.

Outline how the development of herbicide-resistant soybean crops can help meet global food demand. In your answer, also state one ethical or social concern associated with the use of such GM soybeans.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Outline means: Give the main points briefly. Less detail than describe, but every key step has to be there. One short line per step, in order. The marks are for coverage, not depth.
