Homeostasis: explain question

Explain6 marksChallenge

The diagram shows a longitudinal section of a mammalian kidney. The outer region (cortex) contains the glomeruli and Bowman's capsules; the inner region (medulla) contains loops of Henle and collecting ducts; the renal pelvis collects urine. A marathon runner becomes dehydrated and her blood water potential falls.

Explain how the body restores blood water potential, referring to:

  • the structure of the kidney and nephron
  • the roles of the hypothalamus, posterior pituitary, ADH, and aquaporins
  • negative feedback.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
