Homeostasis: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

A student uses glucose test strips to estimate the concentration of glucose in urine samples. The strips contain glucose oxidase, peroxidase, and a chromogen. After adding the urine, the strip is left for 30 seconds, then the colour is compared to a colour chart. The chart shows the following colours for known glucose concentrations:

Glucose concentration (mmol dm⁻³)Colour
0White
2Pale blue
5Medium blue
10Dark blue
20Very dark blue

Explain how the test strip enables the concentration of glucose to be estimated.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
