A patient is suspected of having a bacterial infection. A diagnostic test uses monoclonal antibodies specific to a bacterial surface protein to detect the pathogen in the patient's blood sample. The patient is then vaccinated with an inactivated toxin from the bacterium. A few weeks later, the patient is given an injection of monoclonal antibodies against the same toxin to provide immediate protection.
Compare the type of immunity provided by the vaccine and by the injection of monoclonal antibodies.
