Infectious diseases: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

A farmer adds antibiotics to the feed of healthy livestock to promote faster growth and prevent disease outbreaks. Over time, bacteria in the animals develop resistance to these antibiotics. A human patient later contracts a bacterial infection from handling contaminated meat; the infection is resistant to the same antibiotic.

Describe how penicillin acts on bacteria and why antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. Discuss the consequences of antibiotic resistance resulting from overuse, and the steps that can be taken to reduce the impact of antibiotic resistance.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
