The mitotic cell cycle: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

A biologist observes two cells from a growing root tip, each at a different stage of mitosis.

Cell X: Chromosomes are visible as thin threads. The nuclear envelope is present and the spindle has not yet formed.

Cell Y: Chromosomes are seen as V-shaped structures moving towards opposite poles. The nuclear envelope is absent.

Explain the differences in the behaviour of the chromosomes and the associated structures (nuclear envelope and spindle) between Cell X and Cell Y, naming the stages and describing the events occurring in each.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
