The mitotic cell cycle: describe question

Describe5 marksChallenge

A slide of an animal cell undergoing mitosis is stained and observed under a light microscope. The following features are recorded:

  • chromosomes have reached opposite poles of the cell and appear to be unwinding into thinner threads;
  • a new nuclear envelope is visible around each chromosome cluster;
  • spindle fibers are no longer visible;
  • the cell surface membrane shows a shallow groove around the equator.

Describe the stage of mitosis that this cell is in, and outline the events that occur during this stage.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
