A researcher is studying the process of mitosis in human skin cells. After a small cut, the skin cells surrounding the wound begin to divide to repair the damaged tissue. Using your knowledge of the mitotic cell cycle, explain why the daughter cells produced by mitosis are genetically identical to each other and to the parent cell, and discuss the importance of this in tissue repair.

The mitotic cell cycle: explain question
Explain5 marksStandard
How this question is marked
5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.
Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
