Nucleic acids and protein synthesis: outline question

Outline7 marksChallenge

A eukaryotic gene codes for a digestive enzyme.

(a) Outline the differences between transcription and translation in a eukaryotic cell by constructing a table with the following features:

  • cellular location
  • template used
  • main enzyme(s) or molecular machines involved
  • product(s) formed
  • any post-synthetic modifications that occur before the product is functional.

(b) A substitution mutation occurs in the coding sequence of this gene. Describe how this mutation could alter the final polypeptide, and state one possible consequence if the mutation changes a codon to a stop codon.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Outline means: Give the main points briefly. Less detail than describe, but every key step has to be there. One short line per step, in order. The marks are for coverage, not depth.
