Photosynthesis: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

In an experiment, a plant cell is supplied with carbon dioxide containing the radioactive isotope 14C^{14}C. A radioactive carbon atom is incorporated into a molecule of triose phosphate (TP) in the Calvin cycle.

Explain the sequence of events by which this carbon atom from CO2CO_2 becomes part of a TP molecule. In your answer, name the intermediate compounds and state the roles of ATP and reduced NADP.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
