Photosynthesis: outline question

Outline7 marksChallenge

In an experiment, isolated chloroplasts are exposed to light and supplied with ADP and NADP+. A specific inhibitor is added that prevents the movement of protons from the thylakoid space into the stroma through ATP synthase.

(a) Outline the normal process of proton movement across the thylakoid membrane during the light-dependent stage, and explain how this proton movement is coupled to ATP synthesis. (b) Predict and explain the effect of the inhibitor on the production of triose phosphate (TP) in the Calvin cycle.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Outline means: Give the main points briefly. Less detail than describe, but every key step has to be there. One short line per step, in order. The marks are for coverage, not depth.
