Selection and evolution: describe question

Describe5 marksStandard

A biologist studying a population of snails notices two traits: shell colour pattern (which occurs in three distinct forms: solid brown, striped, or banded) and shell width (which ranges continuously from 2.0 mm to 4.5 mm). The biologist hypothesises that different genetic factors control these two traits, and also wants to investigate whether environmental differences between two habitats affect shell width.

Describe the two types of variation (discontinuous and continuous) using this snail example, and explain the genetic basis of each type. Also describe how a t-test could be used to compare the mean shell width between snails from the two habitats.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
