Analytical techniques: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A colourless organic compound has the molecular formula CX3HX6OX2\ce{C3H6O2}. Its infrared spectrum shows a strong, broad absorption between 2500 and 3300 cm−1^{-1}, and a strong, sharp absorption at about 1710 cm−1^{-1}.

Compare the information given by these two absorptions with the information that would be obtained from the infrared spectrum of a compound containing only a carbonyl group, such as propanone.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
