Analytical techniques: describe question

Describe7 marksChallenge

The mass spectrum of an organic compound, which contains carbon, hydrogen, and a single halogen atom, is recorded. The spectrum shows a molecular ion peak at m/e = 122 with a relative abundance of 100%. There is also an [M+1]+ peak at m/e = 123 with a relative abundance of 9.9% and an [M+2]+ peak at m/e = 124 with a relative abundance of 33%.

Describe how this mass spectrum can be used to deduce: (i) the relative molecular mass of the compound, (ii) an estimate of the number of carbon atoms in the molecule, (iii) the identity of the halogen present.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
