Atomic structure: suggest question

Suggest4 marksStandard

Chlorine exists naturally as two isotopes, X1735X217235Cl\ce{^{35}_{17}Cl} and X1737X217237Cl\ce{^{37}_{17}Cl}.

Suggest, in terms of the particles present in the two atoms, why the isotopes have the same chemical properties but different physical properties, such as mass and density. Include in your answer a definition of the term isotope and an explanation of what the numbers in the notation represent.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
