Carbonyl compounds: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A student is given a sample of butanone, CHX3COCHX2CHX3\ce{CH3COCH2CH3}. The student adds alkaline iodine solution, IX2(aq)\ce{I2(aq)} with NaOH\ce{NaOH}, and warms the mixture. A yellow precipitate forms.

Compare the reaction of butanone with the reaction of propanone, CHX3COCHX3\ce{CH3COCH3}, under the same conditions. In your answer, refer to the structure of the carbonyl compounds, the organic product, and the inorganic product.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
