Compare6 marksChallenge

Butanone, CHX3COCHX2CHX3\ce{CH3COCH2CH3}, and butanal, CHX3CHX2CHX2CHO\ce{CH3CH2CH2CHO}, are structural isomers with the molecular formula CX4HX8O\ce{C4H8O}.

Compare the reactions of the two compounds with: (a) Tollens' reagent; (b) alkaline aqueous iodine.

For each reagent, state what you would observe with each compound and explain any difference in behaviour between the two isomers.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
