Carboxylic acids and derivatives: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Propyl propanoate can be made by reacting propan-1-ol with propanoic acid, and can be hydrolysed back to the alcohol and acid.

Compare the reaction conditions used to make propyl propanoate from propan-1-ol and propanoic acid with the conditions used to hydrolyse propyl propanoate to propanoic acid and propan-1-ol.

In your answer, name the reagents and catalysts for each reaction and state the conditions of temperature (or heat) required.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
