Chemistry of transition elements: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A student dissolves cobalt(II) chloride in distilled water and observes a pink solution. When concentrated hydrochloric acid is added, the solution turns blue. The student is told that the blue colour is due to the formation of a tetrachlorocobaltate(II) complex, [CoClX4]X2−\ce{[CoCl4]^2-}.

Compare the two cobalt(II) complexes with respect to the splitting of the d orbitals, the energy gap between the non-degenerate sets, the frequency of light absorbed, and the colour observed. In your answer, state which complex is octahedral and which is tetrahedral.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
