Two electrolytic experiments are described.
Experiment 1: An aqueous solution of sodium chloride is electrolysed using inert platinum electrodes. A very dilute solution is used, and then the experiment is repeated using a concentrated solution.
Experiment 2: A constant current is passed through an aqueous solution of copper(II) sulfate between a copper anode and a copper cathode. The mass loss of the anode is measured after a known time.
(a) Explain why the products at the electrodes differ between the dilute and concentrated solutions of sodium chloride.
(b) Explain how the data from Experiment 2 can be used to determine a value for the Avogadro constant. Include in your answer the relationship between the Faraday constant, , the Avogadro constant, , and the charge on the electron, .
