A student has two aqueous solutions of acids of the same concentration (0.1 mol dm⁻³). One is hydrochloric acid, , and the other is ethanoic acid, . The student measures the pH of each solution with a pH meter and also measures the electrical conductivity of each solution. Compare the pH values and the conductivity of the two solutions, and explain the reasons for the differences in terms of the dissociation of the acids. In your answer, refer to the Brønsted–Lowry theory of acids.

Equilibria: compare question
Compare7 marksChallenge
How this question is marked
7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.
Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
