Equilibria: describe question

Describe5 marksChallenge

The reaction SOX2(g)+12 OX2(g)⇌SOX3(g)\ce{SO2(g) + 1/2O2(g) <=> SO3(g)} is exothermic in the forward direction. A mixture of sulfur dioxide and oxygen is sealed in a rigid container and allowed to reach dynamic equilibrium at a fixed temperature.

A small amount of a solid catalyst is then added to the mixture, and the temperature is kept constant.

Describe, in terms of the rates of the forward and reverse reactions, what happens when the catalyst is added and how the position of equilibrium is affected. Explain why the catalyst has this effect.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
