A student is given a colourless solution thought to contain a halide salt. A sample is acidified with dilute nitric acid and then aqueous silver nitrate is added. A pale yellow precipitate forms. The precipitate does not dissolve when dilute aqueous ammonia is added, but it does dissolve when concentrated aqueous ammonia is added. In a separate test, another sample of the solution is treated with concentrated sulfuric acid. A pungent gas is produced that turns moist blue litmus paper red, and a yellow solid forms.

Group 17: compare question
Compare7 marksChallenge
How this question is marked
7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.
Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
