Halogen compounds: compare question

Compare6 marksChallenge

2-bromobutane is a secondary halogenoalkane. When it is heated with aqueous sodium hydroxide, the product is butan-2-ol. When it is heated with sodium hydroxide dissolved in ethanol, the product is a mixture of two alkenes.

Compare these two reactions in terms of the conditions used, the mechanism (SNX1\ce{SN1} or SNX2\ce{SN2}) of the nucleophilic substitution, and the role of the hydroxide ion in each.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
