Hydrocarbons: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

An alkene with molecular formula CX5HX10\ce{C5H10} is treated with hot concentrated acidified potassium manganate(VII) (KMnOX4\ce{KMnO4}). The only organic products obtained are propanone and ethanoic acid.

Explain how the identities of these products allow the position of the carbon-carbon double bond in the original alkene to be determined.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
