Butane-1,2-diol is a diol with one primary alcohol group and one secondary alcohol group. Compare the behaviour of butane-1,2-diol with that of a secondary alcohol, such as propan-2-ol, when each is treated separately with an excess of acidified potassium dichromate(VI) under reflux. In your answer, state the organic product formed from each alcohol and explain the difference in the products.

Hydroxy compounds: compare question
Compare5 marksStandard
How this question is marked
5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.
Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
