An introduction to organic chemistry: explain question

Explain7 marksChallenge

Ethyne, CX2HX2\ce{C2H2}, is a straight-chained molecule in which each carbon is bonded to one hydrogen and to the other carbon by a triple bond. Ethene, CX2HX4\ce{C2H4}, is a straight-chained molecule in which each carbon is bonded to two hydrogens and to the other carbon by a double bond.

Explain the shapes of, and the bond angles in, these two molecules, referring to the hybridisation of the carbon atoms and the types of bond present. In your answer include a description of the arrangement of the atoms around each carbon and state whether the molecule is planar.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
