Butanamide, , can be prepared from butanoyl chloride and can undergo further reactions.
(a) Describe two methods by which butanamide can be prepared from butanoyl chloride. In each case state the reagent(s) and conditions required.
(b) Describe the reaction of butanamide with (i) excess hot aqueous sodium hydroxide, and (ii) an excess of lithium aluminium hydride (). Name the organic products in each case.
(c) Explain why amides are much weaker bases than amines.
