Polymerisation: compare question

Compare7 marksChallenge

Two monomers are each able to form a condensation polymer on their own. Monomer A is a hydroxycarboxylic acid, HOCHX2CHX2COOH\ce{HOCH2CH2COOH}. Monomer B is an aminocarboxylic acid, HX2NCHX2CHX2COOH\ce{H2NCH2CH2COOH}.

Compare the polymerisation of monomer A with the polymerisation of monomer B. In your answer, refer to:

  • the type of linkage formed and the atoms joined by it;
  • the other product of each polymerisation;
  • the repeat unit of each polymer.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
