Polymerisation: compare question

Compare7 marksChallenge

Ethene, CHX2=CHX2\ce{CH2=CH2}, polymerises to form poly(ethene). Amino acids, HX2N−CHR−COOH\ce{H2N-CHR-COOH}, polymerise to form polypeptides.

Compare the type of polymerisation reaction that produces poly(ethene) with the type that produces a polypeptide. In your answer, refer to:

  • the functional groups and bonding in the monomers
  • the mechanism of the polymerisation
  • the by-product(s), if any, of each reaction
  • the structure of the polymer chain formed.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
