Reaction kinetics: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

The reaction between nitrogen monoxide and hydrogen is thought to occur in two steps.

Step 1: 2 NO(g)+HX2(g)→NX2O(g)+HX2O(g)\ce{2NO(g) + H2(g) -> N2O(g) + H2O(g)} Step 2: NX2O(g)+HX2(g)→NX2(g)+HX2O(g)\ce{N2O(g) + H2(g) -> N2(g) + H2O(g)}

The rate equation for the reaction is: rate =k[NO]2[HX2]= k[\ce{NO}]^2[\ce{H2}].

Explain how this mechanism is consistent with the rate equation, and identify the rate-determining step and the intermediate.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
