The Periodic Table: chemical periodicity: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

Consider the oxides of the elements sodium to sulfur in Period 3: NaX2O\ce{Na2O}, MgO\ce{MgO}, AlX2OX3\ce{Al2O3}, PX4OX10\ce{P4O10}, SOX2\ce{SO2} and SOX3\ce{SO3}, and the chlorides NaCl\ce{NaCl}, MgClX2\ce{MgCl2}, AlClX3\ce{AlCl3}, SiClX4\ce{SiCl4} and PClX5\ce{PCl5}.

Explain why the oxidation number of the element in the oxide and in the chloride increases across the period, using the outer shell electrons of the elements.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
