Cell membranes and transport: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A student filled four lengths of Visking tubing with 10 cm³ of distilled water and sealed them. Each tubing was placed in a beaker containing 200 cm³ of a sucrose solution of a different concentration. After 30 minutes, the tubing was removed, dried, and weighed. The percentage change in mass was calculated. The results are shown in the table.

Compare the movement of water into and out of the Visking tubing for the four sucrose concentrations, using the concept of water potential.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
