Cell membranes and transport: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A student set up two experiments using Visking tubing to investigate osmosis.

  • Experiment 1: A Visking tubing bag containing distilled water was placed in a beaker of 0.6 M sucrose solution.
  • Experiment 2: A Visking tubing bag containing 0.6 M sucrose solution was placed in a beaker of distilled water.

After 30 minutes, the bags were removed, dried, and their masses recorded. The percentage change in mass for each bag is shown in the table:

ExperimentContents inside bagContents outside bagPercentage change in mass (%)
1Distilled water0.6 M sucrose–10
20.6 M sucroseDistilled water+8

Compare the movement of water in Experiment 1 with the movement of water in Experiment 2. Explain your answer in terms of water potential.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
