Classification, biodiversity and conservation: discuss question

Discuss5 marksStandard

The Rufous-winged sunbird (Nectarinia rufipennis) is a bird species found only on a small tropical island. Its population has declined sharply due to the loss of its forest habitat to oil palm plantations, competition for food from an introduced rat species, illegal hunting for its brightly coloured feathers, and recent changes in the timing of flowering of the plants it feeds on.

Discuss the reasons for conserving this species and the methods that could be used to protect it.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Discuss means: Set out the points on more than one side and weigh them up. Cover both sides, then finish with a judgement that follows from what you wrote.
