Classification, biodiversity and conservation: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Two populations of frogs, Rana cantans and Rana silens, are found in separate but adjacent regions. They are indistinguishable in external morphology (size, colour, body shape) and occupy similar pond habitats. However, their mating calls are distinct, and when individuals from different populations are placed together in a laboratory, no fertile offspring are produced.

Compare how the biological species concept and the morphological species concept would classify these two populations. In your answer, explain the reasoning for each classification.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
