Enzymes: explain question

Explain5 marksChallenge

An enzyme from a thermophilic bacterium was immobilised in alginate beads to study its activity at different temperatures. The initial rate of reaction was measured at each temperature under conditions of saturating substrate concentration. The experiment was repeated in the presence of a fixed concentration of a reversible inhibitor. The results are shown in the table below.

Explain the effect of temperature on the rate of this enzyme-catalysed reaction, and explain the effect of the reversible inhibitor on the Vmax and Km of the enzyme. Use the data to support your answer.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
