The mitotic cell cycle: describe question

Describe5 marksStandard

A student observing mitosis in onion root tip cells wrote down the following descriptions of events, but did not record the stage in which each occurred. The descriptions are not in chronological order.

  • 'The chromosomes align at the equator of the spindle.'
  • 'The sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles.'
  • 'The nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes.'
  • 'The chromosomes condense and become visible; the spindle begins to form.'
  • 'The cell surface membrane pinches inwards, dividing the cytoplasm.'

Describe the correct sequence of these events, naming the mitotic stage in which each occurs.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
