Nucleic acids and protein synthesis: describe question

Describe5 marksChallenge

The following is an mRNA sequence from a eukaryotic gene:

5'- AUG GCU UAC CGA UAA -3'

A partial mRNA codon table is shown:

CodonAmino acid
AUGMet (start)
GCUAla
GCGAla
UACTyr
CGAArg
UAAstop

Three separate mutations occur in this sequence:

  1. A substitution of the uracil in the second codon with guanine.
  2. A deletion of the first guanine of the third codon.
  3. An insertion of an extra adenine after the first base of the fourth codon.

Describe how each mutation would affect the polypeptide produced from this mRNA.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
