Photosynthesis: describe question

Describe5 marksChallenge

A student extracted pigments from a leaf and separated them by paper chromatography using a non-polar solvent. The following Rf values were calculated:

  • Carotene: 0.95
  • Xanthophyll: 0.71
  • Chlorophyll a: 0.65
  • Chlorophyll b: 0.45

Describe how the structure of the chloroplast is adapted for the light-dependent and light-independent stages of photosynthesis. In your answer, refer to the pigments identified in the chromatogram and their roles.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
